Opportunity in Community

A longtime member of the tech Industry, Gabby Dizon, Co-Founder of Yield Guild Games, one of the first gaming guilds in the metaverse, saw an opportunity to help Filipinos. The pioneer blockchain player took this opportunity as a chance to create one of the most successful blockchain gaming guilds in the world.

Dizon was one of the first players of the popular blockchain game, Axie Infinity, back in 2018. After a couple of years playing, in 2020, he noticed that more Filipinos were playing the game due to the harsh COVID-19 lockdowns in the country. These Filipino Axie players learned the entire crypto journey, from wallet creation to fiat conversion, as a community. At this time, Dizon was one of the top Axie breeders, and he noticed that some people wanted to play the game but couldn’t afford to purchase the NFTs he was breeding. 

And this is where Dizon found an opportunity. 

Dizon created one of the early blockchain gaming scholarship models that became the foundation of the guild he later founded with two other community members, Beryl Li and Owl of Moistness.

“A guild’s role is basically to bring people together to do something, whatever that something is. Whether it's to learn together, to play a game, to own an asset, that’s what guilds do,” Dizon told BSC News in an interview. “Right now you see the specialization of a lot of guilds. There are guilds that are Esports teams, game testers, or focused on content creation, but they all bring people together. The magical part of adding blockchain to it is that these guilds can now own assets.”

Dizon shared that by taking full advantage of the bull market in 2021, YGG is preparing them for current market conditions. Now that the industry is in the depths of a bear market, Dizon and the rest of YGG are focused on building.

The guild has made use of its earnings to diversify into other blockchain games and expand into other countries through the creation of SubDAOs like SKYGG, YGGJapan, IndiGG, YGGSEA, and many more. Each SubDAO has their own level of autonomy, and is the local presence of the guild in their respective region, making for a more tailor-fit experience and management of the region they handle. YGG Pilipinas is the only entity directly managed by YGG. 

‍‍“We expanded globally and are in more than 50 games, and now that the market is down we have a very strong focus on product building,” Dizon added. “We want to build something that will basically enhance our user’s skills and reputation so they can find other opportunities in the metaverse. One of the examples of this is our partnership with Nas.io, the Web3 Metaversity.”

Web3 Metaversity is an online learning platform where students learn from watching videos taught by online moderators. Courses will feature lessons that focus on different aspects of Web3 and upon finishing a course, students are given soul-bound tokens tagging the relevant skills based on the courses they’ve finished or their own experience.These are paid courses but holders of any YGG NFT can gain access to courses for free.

With so much going on in the guild despite market conditions, one has to wonder where the guild is heading towards in the future. A question to which Dizon answered “more of the same”

“The vision hasn’t really changed from Day 1,” Dizon answered. “We want to onboard a community anywhere around the world into Web3. We want someone to have the same opportunity wherever they are. We want people to have the chance to participate in the Web3 economy.”
