Two Sides to the Story

Popular magazine publication, Time Magazine, put Filipino players of the PlayAndEarn blockchain game Axie Infinity in the spotlight.

In an article published on July 25, Time Magazine highlighted the horror story Filipino Axie Infinity players experienced during the cryptocurrency bear market. The frustration, deceit, and anger felt by players like Samerson Orias puts the blame on a game that allowed them to earn above their normal wages a few months prior without having to invest anything but time.

“Axie arrived in the Philippines at a time when the country was in lockdown and many were unable to work,” RareAxies, Co-Founder of Tribally Games, told BSC News. “The concept of scholarships emerged, allowing Axie trainers to pay their rent and put food on the table by playing a game. I was disappointed to read such a poorly researched article; specifically because it came from a publication I had previously held in such high regard.”

The Axie Community was one of the first that gave aid to the victims of Typhoon Odette, sourcing funds amounting to more than $450,000 for donations. Some trainers even started a PlayToGive movement to help their local communities, and even started a Christmas Toy Drive using their earnings from games like Axie Infinity. The Time article comes as another media hurdle thrown during a transitory time for the blockchain game.

What is Axie Infinity:

Axie Infinity is a PlayAndEarn blockchain game where players breed, collect, and play with digital pets called Axies and earn from the interactions. It’s built on Ronin, an Ethereum-based side-chain developed by Vietnamese-based gaming studio Sky Mavis. The protocol put eyes on the PlayAndEarn gaming industry back in 2021. In addition, the team is building a digital nation where each community member comes together to play, earn, and live in Lunacia.
