Binance Hires Renowned Europol Expert For AP Intelligence & Investigations
Binance looks to build out its cyber crime and investigations unit for Asia-Pacific with the new appointment of former Europol cryptocurrency expert.
Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance is beefing up its cyber security divsion after appointing Jarek Jakubcek to the role of Head of Intelligence and Investigations, Asia-Pacific (AP).
Announced via the Binance blog on May 12, Jakubcek will lead Binance’s efforts to counter malicious actors in the crypto ecosystem and will be working in partnership with various law enforcement agencies across the Asia-Pacific region. As crypto scams, rug pulls and sanctions take center stage, it’s imperative for crypto adoption on a macro scale that these global exchanges put in the necessary mechanisms to protect users.
“With its growing role in the industry comes growing responsibility, which Binance is taking the lead on,” commented Jakubcek. “I am proud to work alongside the most experienced and talented team within the blockchain industry including former law enforcement colleagues. It will be our duty to ensure efficient cooperation with law enformcenet agencies and prosecutors in the detection and prevention of criminal activities. Together we will be stamping out illicit activities from the blockchain ecosystem and ensure that Binance remains the safest exchange in the world.”
Jakubcek brings with him seven years of experience working at Europol Cybercrime Center’s Dark Web team. Jakubcek was responsible for providing operational and strategic support on major cryptocurrency investigations. Working alongside hundreds of law enformcenet agencies on an international scale, Jakubcek will be able to draw on his experience and relationships to bridge large-scale investigations from his new role at Binance. Prior to this, Jakubcek spent over five years at An Garda Siochana, Ireland’s National Police and Security Service.
Binance finds itself in the middle of global expansionary efforts into the Middle East and North African region, South America, and recently established operations in France. Binance, and more specifically its CEO CZ, were under scrutiny for not taking more action against Russian users of the platform based on global sanctions. Binance was also recently part of a lawsuit where a federal judge dismissed claims by plaintiffs that the exchange failed to register as an exchange or broker-dealer and sold unresitered tokens. So it makes complete sense that with everything going on, the exchange looks to insulate itself from aggressors.
On the staffing side, the exchange continues to beef up it’s legal and investigative departments. Announced via the Binance Blog on May 11, Joshua Eaton was appointed to the role of Deputy General Counsel. Eaton is tasked with leading the organization’s legal affairs and will be supporting global compliance, investigations, and law enforcement coordination activities. A former Deputy U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of California, Eaton possesses over 20 years of experience representing the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and also has experience working with the U.S. Army. Both Tigran Gambaryan, whom Jakubcek will likely report to, and Matthew Price, have also made the jump from public service to the crypto world after joining the Binance ranks in the investigative unit.
“Jarek is a hugely impressive cybercrime expert with connections to law enformcenet agencies all over the world.” Tigram Gambaryan, Global Head of Intelligence and Investigations added. “His role will be pivotal in ensuring that Binance works effectively with police and prosecutors to keep the Binance ecosystem and wider crypto industry secure. As the world’s leading exchange, Binance is totally committed to take the lead on crypto security.”
