Will the NFL Ever Get Involved?

Statements from NBC sports through the ProFootballTalk blog have suggested that the NFL is working out a strategy to get involved in the NFT economy. The league has engaged with potential partners to devise a strategy for digital collection or NFTs. The NFL even distributed a memo to halt teams from releasing their own NFT collectibles.

The league writes in its Memo; to make a “measured and deliberate approach” to this new market. However, individual NFL players have taken an active role in the NFT sector, including Rob Gronkowski and Patrick Mahomes. In the last two months, Gronkowski grossed $1.75 million via the sale of 348 digital collectible cards; one of the items went for $433,000.

Another promising indication of the NFL taking on NFTs is from the NFL Draft performance of rock and roll band - King of Leon. They made history as they release their eighth studio album, When You See Yourself, as a non-fungible token or NFT

On the 29th of April, the band performed in the opening of the NFLDrafts in Brasil. The pro-cryptocurrency band has called NFTs the future not only for music but for sports.

“I think it’s the way of the future, not only for music but you see sports cards in the form of NFTs, artists putting their work through NFT - So not just for music, but for art and I think it will definitely have a place.” - said Nathan Followill, one of the Kings of Leon Band Members.

NFT Application for Sports

NFTs have an incredible significance for sports, players, and fans. It helps to put together rare historical moments in the form of art, stored forever on the blockchain and owned exclusively by collectors.

NFTs also drive a unique type of economy for collectors and entertainers, driving in an immense amount of revenue for players involved. In the Sports Arena, the NBA leads the pack with NBA Top Shot NFT art. Teams like the Golden State Warriors are issuing their own NFT cards and events.
